Over 300 athletes will be descending on the Friendly City in just over a month for the 2017 Special Olympics Saskatchewan Summer Games.

To help make the event a success, organizers are putting out the call for volunteers to help out over the three-day event on June 16-18.

“The provincial summer games are a great opportunity to see what Special Olympics is all about,” said Faye Matt, CEO of Special Olympics Saskatchewan. “We have athletes competing in a number of different sports around Moose Jaw, so we’re looking for volunteers who can spend a little bit, or a lot, of time over the weekend.”

There’s no age restriction for volunteers and Matt encourages families to sign up to help out with the events, which range from bocce, golf, softball, bowling, athletics and swimming.

“We need some hands on deck to make sure that our events run smoothly, so our volunteers might find themselves doing a bit of score-keeping, serving snacks to the athletes and doing some hosting as well, making sure our visitors to Moose Jaw know where they’re going,” said Matt.

“We have our registration set up so that you can be posted with your family members or friends, but come out as a group, come out as an individual, and there is some expertise that we’re looking for in medical skills, so if you have any time to give, please do.”

This will be the first time that Moose Jaw has hosted the Special Olympics provincial summer games and there will be athletes coming into the city from around the province for the three days of events.

Matt said you don’t need to be three for all three days, but any help will be appreciated.

“We’re looking for as many volunteers as possible because there’s a number of different shifts to fill,” she said. “Even if we have enough at a certain venue, it’s always great to have the community there supporting and cheering our athletes on as they’re competing.”
