The Moose Jaw Squirt ‘A’ Ice had a good weekend in the Queen City as they went undefeated on their way to capturing the Regina Minor Girls Fastball Season Kick-off Tournament.

The Ice rolled through the round robin on Saturday, winning all three games, before beating the Regina Fighting Saints in the semifinal and then knocking off the Regina Royal Renegades, 9-3, in the final on Sunday.

“They were all pretty thrilled with that result, they worked hard all weekend,” said Ice coach Marie Wright.

Despite it being early in the season, Wright said that the Ice had all facets of the game working during the tournament.

“They were batting really; we have four really strong pitchers and I can honestly say that they didn’t have one bad inning,” said Wright. “We had some of our first-year girls by the last game, they were stepping up and really hitting the ball hard. They struggled at first, but by the end of the tournament, they were hitting the ball well.”

During the Ice’s game on Saturday night, pitcher Lauren Halverson had a no-hitter going in her three innings, which is the limit for pitchers at that age level.

Halverson combined with Cassia Montgomery to pitch the Ice to the win in the final as well.

“The pitching came out really strong in the final,” said Wright. “We were a little slow starting off on the bats, but once they realized that it was a 3-3 game in the fourth inning, they really stepped up with the bats and came through in the end.”

The Ice will be back on the field together at the end of the month for a tournament in Saskatoon and they will also be competing in the Moose Jaw Peewee Tournament at the end of June.
