For the second time in a year, the Skylar Ackerman rink is the best in the province.

After earning a green jacket as the Under-18 provincial champions in early 2018, the local curling team finished off the year with their second provincial title on Sunday.

Ackerman scored three in the ninth end to beat Madison Kleiter, 11-8, in an extra end in the final of the 2019 Canada Winter Games Provincial Trials in North Battleford.

"I feel so honoured to win my second green jacket, a lot of people don’t even get one in their lifetime, so to have two in two years, I’m so, so happy," said Ackerman after securing the win with her team that also includes third Madison Johnson, second Chantel Hoag and lead Samantha McLaren.

The Ackerman rink put together an incredible run over the past four days.

They lost their opening game of the round robin to Kleiter, 7-4, on Thursday afternooon, but the local team didn’t let that slow them down as they strung together six straight wins after the loss, including beating Kleiter in the rematch in the final.

"We were definitely on a steady uphill climb, that first loss motivated us to say, 'Okay, time to regroup, let’s not lose another one,' and we did that," said Ackerman.

In the final, Ackerman held an 8-5 lead heading into the eighth end after picking up steals in back-to-back ends, turning a 5-5 game into a three-point lead very quickly.

Just as quickly as Ackerman secured the lead, it evaporated with Kleiter scoring three in the eighth end to tie the game at 8-8 and send things into an extra end.

"I don’t think we missed a single shot in the ninth end, which really helped us out there," said Ackerman.

"We were definitely a little frustrated, but we knew that we knew how to play with hammer, to keep things open and make sure that we got our points in the extra end. We told each other that we believed in each other and went out like it was any other game."

Ackerman and company will now get the chance to represent Saskatchewan at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, which run from Feb. 15-Mar. 3, 2019.

The local rink has good experience on the national level after taking home silver at the 2018 Canadian Under-18 Curling Championships in Apr.

Next up for Team Ackerman is the Saskatchewan Junior Championship, which start next Thursday in Saskatoon.
