The Moose Jaw High School Senior Volleyball League Finals are set following Thursday’s semifinal action around the city.

The top two teams in the regular season advanced in both the boys and girls’ leagues.

The Vanier Vikings will host the Central Cyclones in the boys’ final, while the Peacock Toilers will welcome in the Vanier Spirits in the girls’ final coming up on Tuesday.

Vikings, Cyclones Set for Final

Despite an early scare in the first set, the Vanier Vikings cruised into the league final with ease on Thursday night.

The undefeated Vikings secured a spot in the Moose Jaw High School Senior Boys Volleyball League’s championship game with a three-set win over the Cornerstone Falcons in Thursday’s semifinal action.

"It’s good, we lost last year, so now we get to try again," said Vanier senior Cooper Cole.

The Vikings have been on a mission all season after falling to Avonlea in last year’s title game. They made quick work of the Falcons in the semifinals to advance back into the game.

Cornerstone came flying out of the gates, jumping out in front of Vanier for much of the first set, but the Vikings caught them by the 20-point mark and pulled away for a 25-22 win.

That was enough to get Vanier rolling and the won 25-13 in the second set and then finished things off with a 25-20 win in the third set.

"We really brought it back in that first set, kept it even keel and played really well through the next two," said Cole. "We don’t let ourselves get rattled or anything, so we’re able to bring it back like that and that comes with a lot of experience."

The Falcons weren’t too disappointed after the loss as they will now turn their focus to the 3A Boys East Regional Championship in Outlook this weekend.

"We just wanted to come out and have fun, Vanier was undefeated, so we didn’t really like our chances, but we just came out to have fun," said Cornerstone senior Jacob Pilon.

Cornerstone will be aiming to secure their fourth straight trip to provincials during regionals this weekend.

"Our chances are pretty good to make it to [provincials] again," said Pilon. "It would be pretty awesome to go again."

The Vikings will meet the Central Cyclones in the league final after Central secured a four-set win (25-14, 25-20, 20-25, 25-11) over the Avonlea Eagles in the other semifinal on Thursday.

Vanier will host Central at 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

Vanier will also be at the 4A Boys South Regional Championship in Fort Qu’Appelle this weekend.

Peacock, Vanier Sweep Their Way Into Final

The Peacock Toilers were on a mission during Thursday’s semifinal matchup with the Cornerstone Falcons, rolling to a dominating three-set win.

The Toilers return to the final looking for their first title since 2014.

"I’m so excited and I’m so thankful that the team pulled this together, especially in my grade 12 year, so super excited," said Peacock senior Jenna Helland.

There were plenty of smiles on the court for Peacock as they picked up a 25-11 win in the first set to kick things off. They kept that roll going in the second set, securing a 25-12 win over the Falcons.

Cornerstone put up a good fight in the third set, leading for a bit before Peacock stormed back to win 25-20.

"Coming into this, we’ve been working really hard this week and hopefully our competition is ready," said Helland.

The Falcons finish their season having made a lot of progress over the course of the year and with all but two players returning, they’re hoping to build of the year.

"They’re a good team, they’re bigger, stronger and older, so we came in a little shellshocked and shaky, but as the game went on we relaxed and by the third set, we were winning for a lot of it," said Cornerstone Lee Behrns.

"I was really happy with our progress all year, to make the semifinal, to get second in the conference [playdowns] and come that close in regionals, it was a fun year."

The Toilers will go head-to-head with the Spirits in the final next week. Vanier advanced with a three-set win (25-18, 25-14, 25-16) over the B.C.A. Cougars, ending their three-run as league champions.
