The COVID-19 pandemic has been difficult for many but a provincewide virtual vigil is hoping to bring people together.

The vigil is scheduled for March 11 at 7 p.m. on Zoom. It will also be live-streamed on Youtube

Committee chair Blake Sittler said the date of the vigil has great significance when it comes to the pandemic.

“It's the one-year anniversary of the World Health Organization calling the coronavirus a pandemic. So, different provinces had their first cases within a day or two of or a few days of that to date. It just seemed to be the date that stuck out for us,” Sittler said.

The idea came about when Sittler began putting out feelers to a number of religious groups in the province to see if there was an interest in doing such a vigil. He received about 15 responses from groups saying they were interested.

According to Sittler, they want to make the event as broad as possible and have reached out to a number of groups including non-religious, Indigenous, and Métis groups to name a few. Sittler said they want to make the experience as interactive as possible.

“This vigil will give us a chance to get together and share some of our sorrow, some of the things that we're grieving, but maybe haven't had a chance to talk to people about,” he said.

“But it also gives us a chance to talk about some of the things that we're looking forward to and hoping for in terms of after the event.”
