The Water Security Agency (WSA) is warning residents about "water testing" kits showing up on their doorsteps.

The kits, which include a bottle and instructions for water testing, aren't proper testing kits, and the bottle showing up on doorsteps may cause some people to doubt their water quality, which is something the WSA doesn't want.

"Water Security Agency is there to ensure that people have safe water and that's what we do across the province and that if they see any kits on their doorstep, that may be from a private business that may have a commercial motive and wanting to sell them something and that they should not be concerned that their water isn't safe," explained Ron Podbielski, the Communication Manager with the WSA.

The fake testing kits aren't what the WSA would use either, according to Podbielski. Not only does the WSA do their own testing but the bottle provided for the testing is too small and doesn't appear to be sanitized.

It doesn't matter to the WSA if residents choose to purchase if further water filtration systems from companies, they just don't want peoples trust in their water to falter with kits like this ending up on their doorstep.

"Moose Jaw would be a good example," Podbielski said. "The water system there is regulated and permitted by the Water Security Agency. So we do, in cooperation with those municipalities, and the municipalities undertake regular water testing so that we can ensure that those standards for that drinking water actually fall within what's acceptable and safe."

Podbielski said that the kits have mainly shown up in the Saskatoon area, but they could make their way to Moose Jaw and Regina in the future.
