Tyler Wong’s stellar 20-year-old campaign continued on Tuesday night as he played hero for the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

Wong scored a shorthanded goal 3:02 into overtime to lift the Hurricanes to a 5-4 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers in the seventh and deciding game of their second round series.

The Hurricanes will now square off with the Regina Pats in the WHL’s Eastern Conference Final, starting on Friday in the Queen City.

Affiliate player Dylan Cozens, who just turned 16, scored the game-tying goal with just over two minutes to play in regulation to tie the game for Lethbridge.

After an opening scoring on a Zach Fischer goal, the Tigers fell behind 3-1 to the Hurricanes in the first period after goals from Wong, Jordy Bellerive and Egor Babenko.

The Tigers responded in the second period with three goals in 5:19 early in the frame to take the lead. Matt Bradley started the charge just 4:07 into the second and then Mark Rassell scored twice to put Medicine Hat in front.

Stuart Skinner made 36 saves to lead the Hurricanes to the win.

The Eastern Conference Final will be a rematch of last year’s first round series that saw the Pats upset the Hurricanes in five games.

Games 1 and 2 between Regina and Lethbridge will go at the Brandt Centre on Friday and Saturday. After that the series shifts to Lethbridge for Games 3 and 4 on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Western Conference Final will be a rematch from last season with the Kelowna Rockets taking on the Seattle Thunderbirds.

Seattle swept Kelowna last year before falling in five games to Brandon in the WHL Final. This is Kelowna’s fourth straight trip to the conference final series.

They open on Friday in Seattle.
