Last night's wicked storm is serving as a good reminder as to why emergency kits in vehicles are so important.

Almost every highway surrounding Moose Jaw was closed overnight and into the morning, and a number of motorists were left stranded after getting stuck.

Kayleen was driving from Moose Jaw west and spent over 13 hours stuck in her vehicle by Chaplain.

"Me, my friend, my three kids, and our brand-new puppy have been stranded here since 7:00 last night. We left from Moose Jaw going 10km/hr the whole time down the highway until we got here. We were following a semi and he had to stop, so we had to stop as well. The drifts on the driver side are up to my door handle and the van won't move."

A Canadian Pacific employee was also stuck on the highway since 5:00 last night with a number of coworkers.

"We were headed to a derailment, and about a third of our crew got stuck on the road. The rest of the crew made it to Maple Creek."

Some key things to keep in your car include warm clothing, a battery-operated radio, flashlights, a first aid kit, water, and non-perishable snacks.

The same things could and should be kept at home as well in the event of an extended power outage.
