All three phases of the game were working for the Moose Jaw Midget AA Canucks on Wednesday night.

The Canucks rolled to a 12-2 mercy win over the Regina Buffalo in Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League action at Ross Wells Park.

The offence was rolling putting up 12 runs, the defence was strong limiting the errors to just three and Dawson Kurz was lights out on the mound in the win for the Canucks.

“We were playing good defence tonight and started hitting the ball better, finding the gaps, getting guys home that were on base instead of leaving them out there,” said centerfielder Garrick Ward, who finished off the game with an RBI-single in the fifth, driving in Moose Jaw’s 12th run.

Canucks centrefielder Garrick Ward smacks an RBI-single in the fifth inning during Moose Jaw's 12-2 win over Regina on Wednesday.

Ward was 2-for-4 at the plate and played a strong game in the outfield for the Canucks.

He said it was nice to see their offence get rolling.

“We haven’t been hitting the ball as well lately, so it was nice to mercy a team for once,” said Ward.

The Canucks opened with two runs in the first inning and then extended that lead to 3-0 in the second frame.

They pulled ahead big in the fourth, posting four runs in the frame, and then they finished off the win by scoring five runs in the fifth inning.

Ryan Botterill and Michael Blazieko each had doubles in the win, while Kurz helped out his own cause at the plate, going 1-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBIs.

Ward said they were really trying to work the count against the Buffalo pitchers.

“We were trying to get their starter out of there and get into their bullpen and see what they’ve got,” said Ward.

Regina ended up using three pitchers in the five-inning loss as Moose Jaw tagged them for 12 hits and struck out just four times.

Kurz went the five complete innings for the Canucks in the win, giving up two runs — one earned — on four hits, while striking out four and walking two.

Ward said that they knew that if they scored just a few runs, that they would be in good hands with Kurz on the mound.

“It’s nice having him on the mound, you can trust him and if you put up runs, you know that you’re going to get a good outing from him,” said Ward.

The Canucks sit in third place in the SPBL with a 9-4 record after Wednesday’s win.  They’ll be back on the field on Thursday to host the 0-10 Regina Mets at Ross Wells Park.  First pitch is at 7 p.m.
