The Moose Jaw Canucks will have home field advantage this weekend as they co-host the 2018 Baseball Saskatchewan Midget AA Tier 2 Provincial Championship.

The Canucks will play their round robin games on Friday and Saturday from the friendly confines of Ross Wells Park before the playoff round goes in Regina on Sunday.

Head coach Kevin Zerff said they're excited to get to play at home to start provincials.

"We haven't played a home game since June 23 because of some scheduling and rainouts, so it's sure nice to be back and finish up at home," said Zerff. "We've got a great draw, great times and let's face it, Ross Wells is the nicest place in Saskatchewan to be, so we're looking forward to it."

The Canucks didn't get the results that they were looking for this past weekend during the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League's Midget AA Division Playoffs. They went 1-2 in the round robin and missed out on a chance at their third straight title.

Zerff said that's given the team some extra motivation going into this weekend.

"We ended up in the round robin beating the team that won the whole league, so we know that we can be there and it's just a matter of putting it all together," he said.

Over the course of this season, the Canucks have played some stellar ball at times and had some struggles at times.

Zerff is confident that when they put it all together on the field, they can compete with any team in the tournament.

"The three main things are, our pitching has to line-up and we've got to provide some run support with some good defence," said Zerff. "In the games that we've had all three, we've played very well and we've won some big games, but it can fall apart and you have good pitching without run support or defence and you're done."

The Canucks open up against the Regina Pacers on Friday morning and then they take on the Saskatoon Thunder Braves and Prince Albert Royals on Saturday to finish off the round robin.

Moose Jaw plays the Pacers regularly in league play, but Zerff said that Saskatoon and Prince Albert are unknowns to them, so they will just have to go out and play.

"For the most part, I think there's a pretty level playing field this year," he said.

"The boys are really excited to get things going and getting to play our first three round robin games at home adds a bit extra to it."

First pitch between the Canucks and Pacers is set for 11 a.m. Friday morning and then Saskatoon takes on Prince Albert at 2 p.m. to wrap up the opening day’s action at Ross Wells Park.
