The season didn’t end how the Moose Jaw Chiefs had planned over the weekend.

The Chiefs were swept aside in two games by the Saskatoon Brewers in the Prairie Gold Lacrosse League’s Senior Division championship final, losing 19-5 at home on Friday and then falling 22-2 on Sunday in Saskatoon.

“We definitely had a goal to be competitive in the final and for some reason, we couldn’t quite put our thumb on why we lacked the offensive prowess (to keep up with the Brewers) and defensively, we just couldn’t stop them,” said assistant captain Jeff Kitts on Monday.

The first period of Game 1 looked like it was going to be a hard fought back-and-forth series as the two teams traded goals and sat tied at 3-3 after 20 minutes, but the Brewers exploded for ten goals in the second period and didn't look back for the rest of Game 1 or Game 2.

Moose Jaw has advanced into the final in each of their four season in the league, but they’ve dropped the past two championship finals to the Brewers, who finished this season undefeated.

Kitts said that the Brewers have really developed their team over the past few seasons and they’ll need to find a way to keep up.

“They were able to pick up some more guys that were college lacrosse players and we found that our foot speed just didn’t really match up with them this year,” said Kitts.

“As we move forward, we’re going to have to find some guys with some speed to match theirs and hopefully as we play them next year, we can tighten that gap.”

The Chiefs enter every season with a goal of winning the championship and to come up short for the second straight season has left a sour taste in the team’s mouth heading into the offseason.

“The focus will be getting back to the final, but how do we make sure that we can narrow the gap and give ourselves a chance to win like we’ve done in the past few seasons,” said Kitts.

Moose Jaw went 8-4 in the regular season to finish third heading into the playoffs. They were able to upset the second place Regina Heat in the semifinal to set up the rematch with the Brewers, who finished the season with a 15-0 record overall.
