After overcoming a slow start, the Moose Jaw Chiefs found their stride in the second period and rolled to an 11-1 win over the Meewasin Valley Plainsmen on Sunday.

The win kicked off the 2019 season in the Prairie Gold Lacrosse League's senior division for the Chiefs.

"We're a young team, we're developing new players again, there are a couple more pickups that we had this year and we just had to settle, that's it," said Chiefs captain Kyle Dalgarno, who finished with two goals in the win.

"Possess the ball, slow it down, play our game and not there's, and we eventually caught on."

With some new faces joining in with some key returning talent, the Chiefs are hoping to get back on top in the PGLL. Dalgarno said it's only up from here.

"We had a couple of big pickups, I was really surprised with what the boys brought to this game, we were a little shaky, but that comes and as the games go on, we'll get there," he said.

Todd Doepker led the Chiefs with a goal and five points, while Tanner Kittler had a hat trick. Cole Morash added two goals and Brayden Johnson picked up a goal and two points.

The Chiefs picked up goals from Morash, Johnson and Dalgarno over the course of the first period, but never really settled in until the second.

The offence started clicking early in the middle frame for the Chiefs with Kittler, Jeff Kitts and Dalgarno scoring in the opening 9:25.

Matt Lys and Doepker added goals later in the period to make it 8-0 for the Chiefs after two.

Kittler scored shorthanded just 15 seconds into the third period, Morash added goal just past the midway point of the frame and Kittler completed his hat trick with 1:33 to go in the game.

Paul Toth had the Plainsmen's lone goal with 7:28 left in regulation.

The Chiefs and Plainsmen will meet again for a rematch in Saskatoon this Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Moose Jaw will be back on their home court the next day to host the Estevan Impact, 1 p.m, at the Kinsmen Arena.
