On paper, the first place Moose Jaw Canadians would have been able to get the same kind of early lead on the Giants Tuesday night that they’ve been able to get on every other team and cruise to a victory in Rambler Park Men’s Fastball League action.

But the Giants had other plans and rocked and rolled their way to an 11-4, six inning win at Lyle Helland Diamond at Memorial Field, putting a halt on the Canadians long winning streak and inserting themselves into the conversation for the best team in the league.

In the top of the first Brad Flanagan hit a two-run home run and Terry Danberg had a two-RBI single as the Giants stormed out to the early 6-0 lead. The Canadians didn’t get their first run of the game until Kent Barber’s sacrifice fly scored Riley Almasi. And while the Canadians tried to come back with a Jay Livingston two-run bomb to leftfield, they never got a handle on Giants starter Derrick Ross. Finally, Darryl Callaghan’s two-run homer in the sixth was enough to end the game early for the Giants, who were well aware of what the Canadians’ big bats can do.

“It’s nice because they’ve come back on us before,” Callaghan said. “They’re a good hitting team and you don’t know. Anything can happen in the seventh.”

The Canadians and Giants will both play a game against the Rhein Rockets Saturday at Memorial Field. Games are 1 p.m. (Giants) and 3 p.m. (Canadians).

The next league action for both teams is Tuesday when the Canadians play the Piapot North Stars at 7 p.m. and the Giants play the Highway 22 Cowboys at 9 p.m., with both games at Memorial Field. It’s the last regular season games of the year for both teams.
