Brett Howden scored his first goal of the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship, potting a pair in Canada’s 8-0 win over Denmark to close out the round robin on Saturday.

The win clinches first place in Pool A for Canada, giving them one of the top seeds heading into the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

It was a big bounce back performance for Canada after falling to the United States in the outdoor game the day before. “It was a draining day yesterday for sure, but everybody got their rest, we had a lot of time to relax today and get ready for the game,” Howden told TSN after the game.

Howden’s first goal of the game came with 2:39 left in the first period and helped Canada build up a 3-0 lead after one.

The Moose Jaw Warriors’ captain scored his second of the game on a tip in front of the Denmark net with 9:20 gone in the second period. That put Canada up 5-0 after two.

The Canadians added three more goals in the third period for a lopsided win.

Alex Formenton of the London Knights had a goal and two points in the win.

Mississauga Ice Dogs forward Michael McLeod, Regina Pats forward Sam Steel, London’s Robert Thomas, Cale Makar of the University of Massachusetts and Cape Breton forward Drake Batherson also scored for Canada.

Carter Hart stopped all 18 shots in goal for his first shutout of the tournament.

Canada will take on Switzerland in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

The final day of round robin action has the Czech Republic facing Switzerland; Finland meets the United States to decide second in Pool A; Slovakia faces Denmark; and Russia battles Sweden.
