Three local teams headed to Brandon, MB on the weekend and all three were able to come back with some hardware from the 20th annual Brandon Female Hockey Challenge.

The Bantam and Midget Mavericks each won gold, while the Peewee Mavericks came away with silver during the weekend tournament.

For the Bantam Mavericks, the tournament win was the continuation of a strong start to the season that has seen them rocket to first place in the South Saskatchewan Female Bantam A Hockey League.

“The girls were pretty excited after the win in the dressing room and on the way home,” said head coach Kevin Wilbur.

Over the weekend, they opened up with a 2-2 tie against the Estevan Chargers and then won their next two round robin games, beating the Warren Mercs, 14-0, and the Yorkton Crushers, 4-1.

The Mavericks would meet the Crushers again in the final and would come out with an even better result, picking up a 4-0 shutout.

“Our goalie (Harper Davey) was on a hot streak there,” said Wilbur. “She only let in three goals during the tournament and our fore-check was working for us too, so we were able to keep pressure on them and keep the puck in their end.”

Moose Jaw outscored the opposition 24-3 over the course of the tournament and were able to put together a pretty complete effort throughout the tournament. Wilbur is hoping that's something that they can carry over to their league play now.

“We played with a great tempo over the last two games, Yorkton is a high-tempo team and our girls were able to match and overcome that tempo, so I want to see them keep that going into the rest of our games for the rest of the season,” he said.

The Mavericks have been dominating their league so far this season. After dropping their first game of the year, they've strung together nine straight wins to sit in first place at 9-1-0.

They return to action on Friday when they travel to Wood River to face the Ice Cats.

In the Midget division at the Brandon tournament, the Mavericks ran the table, going 4-0 over the three days.

They opened with a 3-2 win over the Regina Panthers; then beat the Regina Tigers, 5-1; they skated past the Parkland Panthers, 3-2; and finished off the tournament with a 4-1 win over the Saskatoon Comets in the final to take gold.

The Midget Mavericks will be back on the ice this weekend when they take on the Parkland Lions in games on Saturday and Sunday in Churchbridge.

In the Peewee division, the Mavericks couldn't get past the Foxwarren Foxes, falling to them 4-1 in the round robin and then 4-1 again in the final to come away with silver. They picked up a 4-3 win over the Brandon Pizza Express and a 3-1 win over the Weyburn Angels.

Returning to league play, the Peewee Mavericks sit at 3-3-0 on the year. They will host the Swift Current Fire Cats and Weyburn Angels on Saturday and Sunday.
