Kyle Sonntag left everything out on the mound for the Moose Jaw Miller Express on Thursday, but the offence couldn’t come through.

“It’s becoming a reoccurring nightmare,” said head coach Michael Hunt.

“It’s really a testament to just how difficult and quality this league is, it only takes a couple of errors — physical or mental, and today was mental — and the game can change on a dime and that’s exactly what happened today.”

The Miller Express lost 3-1 to the Cardinals in Yorkton for their sixth straight loss, and second in three nights to Yorkton.

Sonntag went seven innings, giving up three runs on eight hits, but it didn’t end up being enough as the Millers’ offence stranded seven runners on base and didn’t get their first hit until the fifth.

“Kyle Sonntag gave 100-percent of everything that he do, he threw his rear-end off and we just didn’t help him out,” said Hunt.

Moose Jaw’s only run came in the fifth inning when Chris Suarez led off the frame with a sgbnle and then eventually came around to score on a bases loaded walk by Jordan Abushahla, but that would be all the Millers came away with in the frame as they still trailed 2-1.

Yorkton opened the scoring with two runs in the third inning thanks to an run scoring double by Dylan Borman and an RBI-single from Billy Clapperton.

The Cardinals restored their two-run lead in the second inning when Clipperton doubled and then Cory Canterbury traded places with him thanks to another double.

Kody Rock picked up the win on the mound for Yorkton, allowing one run on six hits over 6 2/3 innings.  He struck out three and walked two.

Spencer Jackson and Austin Douglas combined to pitch 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to keep the Millers from closing the gap.  Moose Jaw loaded the bases in the seventh, but came away empty handed and didn't get another base runner in scoring position.

First baseman Chris Suarez went 2-for-4 and scored Moose Jaw’s only run in the loss.

Hunt said Suarez continues to be a highlight for the team and they’re playing well enough defensively to win games now, but just can’t get over the hump.

“Right now guys are pressing because they know the record, but the record is the least of my concerns at this point because what were doing to ourselves is why that records there,” said Hunt.  “If we just stop pressing and loosen up a bit, we’ll find ourselves in more advantageous positions.”

The Millers sit at 4-16 on the year.

They return to the field on Friday night at Ross Wells Park to host the Melville Millionaires.  First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
