One night after collecting clutch it after clutch it, the Moose Jaw Miller Express just didn't have it on Thursday night at Ross Wells Park.

Moose Jaw fell 3-0 to the Weyburn Beavers in Western Major Baseball League action, just one night after putting up ten runs and 13 hits in an extra innings win over Yorkton.

“We put good wood to the ball, but we just couldn't seem to find holes and then we didn't have good timely hitting, it happens, it was just one of those days,” said Chris Suarez, who collected two of Moose Jaw's six hits.

“That's baseball, it's a game of failure, it goes back-and-forth and you never know what to expect.”

The loss serves as a missed opportunity for the Millers with the Melville Millionaires falling 8-1 in Swift Current on Thursday. Moose Jaw remains a half-game back of Melville for the final playoff spot with two games to play in the regular season.

Melville has three games to go.

Weyburn put up two runs in the top of the first inning and really ended the game right there. Dan Moro led off the game with a single and came around to score two batters later after a stolen base and then a single by Jordan Anderson.

Wylie Johnston drove in Anderson to give Weyburn the early lead.

Moose Jaw's best opportunity to get on the board came in the fifth when Suarez led off with a double, but he was left standing at third base. That was the only time that Moose Jaw got a runner to third during the game.

Kyle Sonntag gave up 12 hits over eight innings of work on the mound, but was able to work himself out of jams as he allowed just the two runs – only one earned – in the first inning. He finished with two strikeouts and one walk.

“Everything felt good and they didn't really square anything up, so can't complain a whole lot, they got lucky a few times and can't really do much about it,” said Sonntag after the game.

It was a back-and-forth pitching duel for the most part with Weyburn starter Hunter Tipton going eight shutout innings, giving up six hits with three strikeouts. He induced a number of fly balls out of the Millers.

Sonntag said he was focused on just trying to match Tipton throughout the game and hoping that the offence would come alive late like it has lately.

“In my mind you always want to outlast the opposing pitcher, so when he's doing well, you want to do even better so that you can outlast and out duel him,” he said.

With so much riding on each game, Sonntag said he had some extra focus coming into the game, but wasn't worrying too much about where the team is in the standings and pressing at all during the outing.

“Once you're in the game, it's another game and you're just trying to execute pitches, execute plays and execute at the plate,” he said.

Despite the loss, the Millers know they're still in the thick of things with two games to go and are going to move past the loss as quickly as possible.

“We're still pumped, we know we still have a shot, so we're going to do our best to keep it going, we all love to play the game, so why not keep playing,” said Suarez.

The Millers will host Swift Current on Friday night for the final regular season home game. They then wrap up the year with a trip to Melville on Saturday, which could decide their playoff fate.
