The U12 B Ice have been in a position in the last few games of having to create their own opportunities to score runs.

The team's batters have had walks aplenty in recent games, including a whole bunch in a 20-3 win last night over the Regina Saints.

Head coach Shawn Okerstrom said his team has had a very good focus for most of the season

“We had one doubleheader when they were a little lazy and we lost both games by one run,” said Okerstrom. “And that’s our only losses all season. It caused them to refocus And yeah, things are looking good so far.”

The Ice had no problem scoring runs despite new rules saying you can't steal home on a wild pitch. Okerstrom has been happy with the progress they've made.

“At the B level, you don’t have the pitching to hit sometimes, so we concentrate on baserunning technique. And with the new rules you have to create those opportunities,” he said.

There were many innings when the Ice were batting where within 12 or fewer pitches, the bases were loaded and it was just a matter of the hitters not chasing pitches far out of the strike zone to get their maximum five runs per inning

Ice starting pitcher Sophia Johnstone struck out four on the mound to set the pace for the Ice.

The Ice won the second game of the double-dip 16-6. The Ice scored five runs in each of the first three innings and needed only six hits through the game. Hot hitter Avery Funke had a pair of RBI in that game.

Their next games are Friday night at home with a doubleheader against Gravelbourg, with the first pitch for the first game at 6 p.m., but they're also looking forward to provincials in a couple of weeks in Saskatoon.

The Ice took 40 free passes to first base over the two games. The team is now 8-2 on the season and on top of the league.

The U12 A Ice were also in action last night, winning 23-8 over the Regina Royals.

Zoey Chesney had three hits in the game and a pair of RBI, while Gracelyn Blanchard had two RBI as well. The U12 A Ice take on the Regina Royals again next Tuesday.
