New York Rangers goalie Hendrik Lundqvist stopped all four shooters for Canada in the shootout to lift Sweden to gold at the 2017 IIHF World Championship in Cologne, Germany.

Former Moose Jaw Warriors captain Brayden Point was stopped by Lundqvist in the shootout, as were Nathan MacKinnon, Ryan O'Reilly and Mitch Marner, while Nicklas Backstrom and Oliver Ekman-Larsson both scored for Sweden to give them a 2-1 win in the championship game on Sunday.

The loss snaps Canada's run of two straight World Championships.

In regulation, Tampa Bay Lightning defenceman Victor Hedman scored with 21 seconds left in the second period to give Sweden a 1-0 lead heading into the third.

That advantage didn't last long as O'Reilly potted a power play goal for Canada just 1:58 into the third to tie the game.

The score stayed that way for the rest of regulation and through the 20-minute overtime period, meaning the gold medal was going to be decided in the shootout.

Canada couldn't find a way to beat Lundqvist, giving Sweden the gold medal.

Point finished with four goals and five points in his first world championship tournament, wrapping up a stellar rookie season that saw him register 18 goals and 40 points in 68 games with the Lightning during the NHL season.

Russia ended up taking bronze with a 5-3 win over Finland on Sunday.
