The Moose Jaw Prairie Dogs put together an incredible season as they lost just seven games overall throughout the year.

The Prairie Dogs lost out in the semifinals at the Baseball Saskatchewan Mosquito AA Tier 1 Provincial Championship in Lloydminster last weekend.

"Being a first year team coming into the league, we weren't sure how everything was going to play out, but the boys did really well, went above all expectations, so I'm kind of excited for the years to come, it's a good group of kids," said Prairie Dogs coach Dustin Caplette.

For the past few years, the Moose Jaw Baseball Association had just two teams in the Midget AA and Bantam AA division, but in an effort to build a program that started at a younger age group, the Prairie Dogs were created at the Mosquito AA level.

The Prairie Dogs started the season strong and never looked back, posting a 25-7 record overall throughout the year.

While the Prairie Dogs played in the Baseball Regina Mosquito AA League for most of the season, they moved up a division to play in the Mosquito AAA League Playoffs and also showed well at AAA tournaments throughout the year.

"At AA we started out really strong and we picked up a lot of AAA exhibition games, on the year in the AAA games, we went 9-3 and one of those was our semifinal loss at provincials, so overall it was a pretty solid year," said Caplette.

The Prairie Dogs went 2-1 during the round robin at provincials, beating the Battleford Beavers, 15-10, on Friday and the Yorkton Cardinals, 15-0, on Saturday. They lost 14-10 to the Lumsden Cubs on Saturday afternoon to close out the round robin.

In the semifinal, the Swift Current 57s were able to pull away for a 15-5 win.

"In that semifinal game, we came out strong and then just kind of fell apart in the last few innings," said Caplette.

The Mosquito level is for players in the 10-11 age group and Caplette said the young players really came along throughout the season.

"A lot of it was just teaching them the basic stuff about baseball, getting them interested, keeping them engaged and then learning the rules," he said.

Two of the players are eligible to return to the Prairie Dogs next season, while the rest of the team will be moving up to the Peewee level in 2019.
