Royden Taylor was very involved in the hockey community in both Caronport and Moose Jaw, and now his legacy will live on.

The Prairie Hockey Academy announced this week that they will be hosting the Royden Taylor Golf Classic this summer with the funds raised going into a hockey scholarship for the local program.

“We're excited to be able to honour Royden Taylor and his legacy and his family and the hours of time that their dad and husband gave to the minor hockey community,” said PHA President Justin Simpkins.

Taylor managed the Caronport Cougars midget AA high school hockey team for years and is also a former Chairman of the Moose Jaw Warriors. He volunteered for years with minor hockey and served as a billet for both Cougar and Warrior hockey players.

“He lived in Caronport and ran the local mechanic shop there, but more than that, he was a husband, a father and a hockey dad,” said Simpkins. “The thing about Royden when I talk to people about him is that he loved minor hockey, he loved building young men and mentoring them, and he actually in his own way built scholarships to bring hockey players here.”

The Prairie Hockey Academy is heading into their inaugural season this fall and will feature a bantam AAA and midget AAA team. The scholarship will focus on giving families the opportunity to send their kids to PHA.

Simpkins said that Taylor's legacy, his values and principles that PHA are built on will live on through the scholarship.

“All the profits will go towards the scholarship fund and helping young athletes enrol in our bantam prep and midget prep programs,” said Simpkins.

The tournament will be held on July 14 at the Hillcrest Golf Club here in Moose Jaw.
