The Moose Jaw Regals were right there in all three games, but came just short in the end.

The Regals posted an 0-3 record in the round robin and missed out on the playoff round at the 2018 Baseball Saskatchewan Midget AA Tier 2 Provincial Championship this past weekend.

Moose Jaw opened the tournament with a 6-5 extra inning loss to the Regina Pirates on Friday and head coach Kevin Smith said that loss really set the tone for the rest of their games.

"If we win that game, things turn out a bit better, that team went on to play in the final. We knew we needed to win that Friday game and the other two games were going to be tougher sledding," said Smith.

"Overall, I thought our pitching and defence were just fine, but we lacked a little bit in our hitting department and it’s kind of been like that all year."

The Regals would lose 14-9 to the Saskatoon Hoppers on Saturday afternoon and then they dropped an 11-4 game to the Regina Cobras to close out the round robin.

Smith said they were right there in every game, but just needed a bit extra.

"We had a little bit more left in the tank for sure," said Smith. "If we win Friday night, it kind of carries over for the whole weekend and it wouldn't have surprised me for us to be in the final on Sunday, we have a good enough group of guys and team, but sometimes on a short weekend like that, you need a couple of breaks to go your way."

The Regina Reds beat the Regina Pirates, 14-13, in the provincial final on Sunday, which were both teams that the Regals beat during regular season play in the Regina Optimist Junior Baseball League.

Smith said they were close all year and made some good strides over the course of the year, but there's definitely some areas to work on heading into next season.

"Defensively, we came a long way and you could see that in our final weekend, which is what we asked the guys to do," said Smith. "We lacked a bit in hitting and that's something for us to focus on heading into next year."

The Regals went 6-10 overall this season in the Regina Optimist Junior Baseball League.
