It took every one of the 60 minutes, but the Saskatchewan Roughriders were able to come away from the Banjo Bowl with a 25-24 victory on Sunday afternoon.

Kicker Sandro DeAngelis nailed a 40-yard field goal as time expired to give the Riders the sweep of the two-game series with the Bombers for the second straight season.

Winnipeg had a 23-22 lead and the ball late, but when their drive stalled deep in Riders territory in the final minute, they decided to forgo the game sealing field goal to pin the Riders deep with a punt.  Mike Renaud’s punt sailed into the end zone though putting the Bombers up by two, but giving the Riders the ball at the 35-yard line.

Backup quarterback Drew Willy connected with running back Kory Sheets for 10 yards; then hit Brooks Foster over the middle for a 20-yard gainer; before taking it himself for nine-yards to set up the game winning field goal by DeAngelis.

Willy came in for Darian Durant in the first quarter after the Riders’ starter left the game with a hip flexor injury and finished the day 17-of-23 for 188 yards passing, including a 33-yard TD pass to Sheets.  He also threw one interception and rushed for 52 yards.

Sheets provided the majority of offence for the Riders with 12 carries for 32 rushing yards along with five catches for 73 yards and two touchdowns.

The game looked to pick up right where last Sunday’s Labour Day Classic beating left off -- which the Riders won 52-0 at Mosaic Stadium -- as Terrell Maze forced Terrence Edwards to fumble on Winnipeg’s opening possession.

Winnipeg held a slim 14-13 lead at halftime thanks to an 82-yard punt return TD by Demond Washington.

The Riders struck first in the second half with the 33-yard hook up between Willy and Sheets, but Winnipeg continued to chip away as kicker Justin Palardy hit three field goals in the half.  All of Winnipeg’s offensive scores in the game came by field goal with Palardy going 5-for-7 on the day.

DeAngelis went 3-for-4 with his only miss coming on a 40-yarder in the fourth quarter.  He made up for that one with the game winner.

The Riders improve to 5-5 on the year and into a tie for third in the CFL’s West Division with the Edmonton Eskimos.  Winnipeg drops 2-8, but remain only one game back of Hamilton in the East.

Saskatchewan gets Monday and Tuesday off before returning to the practice field to get ready for a trip to Montreal coming up next weekend.
