After going dormant the last couple of years, rugby is back in the Notorious City.

The Moose Jaw Rugby Football Club has seen a renewed interest in the sport and they are hoping to build the program back up.

“There's more rugby in town now for younger kids and sort of piggybacking off that we thought we'd try and open it up and make it available to everyone,” says club president Trevor Dawe.

Mini rugby trains every Tuesday from 5:30 to 7 p.m., while the adults hit the pitch on Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m.

Training is taking place at Moose Park, as the club's regular field at MacDonald Park is under repairs. They're hoping to return to MacDonald Park later this summer.

Dawe says, so far, the response has been very positive but they are hoping to see more players join.

“Rugby is not a very common sport in the Prairies. You're definitely getting a lot of people who either played it a long time ago when they lived somewhere else, or they've never played it before, but they're curious and they want to try something different,” he says.

The Moose Jaw Rugby Club’s goal is to field men's and women’s 7s teams for a tournament in Regina on July 10, with the ultimate goal of joining a league later this year.

“It'll give us a chance to build and expose the game to people who haven't played before, and then the chance to be entered into full league play later this summer if we have the numbers. Otherwise, it'll be next year,” Dawe adds.

The club is also looking to start non-contact rugby indoors at the Yara Centre this fall in the hopes of growing the game.
