The defending city champion Vanier Spirits girls volleyball team are in the right mindset heading into the city playoffs.

They defeated the B.C.A. Cougars three sets to one (25-15, 25-16, 17-25, 25-13) last night in the final regular season league game.

“We’ve been doing some good things,” said Spirits head coach Brad Hennenfent. “The girls are starting to come together as a team. We’ve been digging the ball better than we have been and that’s been a big push we’ve been working on.”

Vanier's Paige Beausoliel didn't play the full games last night after picking up an injury over the weekend at a tournament in Leader, but the Spirits were able to show a lot of depth in their win.

“The biggest thing is our passing wasn’t very good,” Hennenfent said. “Against a good team if you don’t pass very good, then we’re not going to be attacking against them. We have to attack to put them on defence so that we can get some easier balls back. But if we give them easier balls, they’re going to come hard at us.”

The playoff matchups have been decided.

Next Tuesday, Cornerstone will be at Central in the girls quarterfinals, while Avonlea is at Riverview, Peacock is at Central and B.C.A. is at Cornerstone in the boys quarterfinals.

The defending city champion Vanier girls will host B.C.A. in a semifinal Nov. 7, with the quarterfinal winning team from Tuesday playing at Peacock in the other semifinal.

In the boys league's semifinals, Vanier will host the lowest seed from the quarterfinal winners, with the second lowest seed playing at the second best seed in the other semifinal

The city final for both girls and boys will be Nov. 13.
