Over 30 teams from around the prairies hit basketball courts in the Friendly City over the weekend for the third annual Premier Prairie Classic club basketball tournament.

The local teams used their home courts to their advantage winning seven medals across five divisions.

"All the teams that participated played really well, so that was awesome," said Spartans coach Ryan Boughen.

The Under-17 Boys Spartans led the way at the tournament, collecting a gold medal over the Weyburn Eagles, who finished in second, and Saskatoon Admirals, who took bronze.

The Spartans are made up mostly of players from the Central Cyclones senior boys team and Boughen said they really found their stride over the weekend.

"Overall, what we did better this weekend from our weekend in Calgary, we just moved the ball better, we played better as a team, we had a chance to get a few more practices in and the kids are starting to get back into the swing of things," said Boughen.

The Spartans finished in third place in the U17 Girls division behind the Medicine Hat Renegades and Parkland Sabres, respectively.

The U15 Boys Tier 1 division was won by the Regina Hornets, who just edged out the Spartans in second place, while the Saskatoon Slam Warriors finished in third.

The Moose Jaw Ballers 2 came away with a bronze medal in the U15 Boys Tier 2 division. The Regina U14 Hornets picked up gold and the Xcite Athletics took silver.

In the U15 Girls division, the Weyburn Cobras finished in first place, the Parkland Sabres in second and the Spartans in third.

Moose Jaw teams came away with two medals in the U13 Boys division with the Spartans picking up silver and the Ballers in bronze.

Boughen said you can really see the benefit for the kids of getting on the court during the offseason.

"They're getting bigger, they're getting stronger, they're understanding the game better and this weekend's play was another example of those kids just growing in those areas and becoming better basketball players overall," he said.
