Hundreds of swimmers from around the province were in Moose Jaw on the weekend for the 2018 Mike Mintenko Summerfest at the Phyllis Dewar Outdoor Pool.

This was the 52nd edition of the annual swim meet and the host Kinsmen Flying Fins put together a strong performance in the pool over the two days.

Swimmers from the Flying Fins ended up walking away with 34 medals from the meet.

12-year-old Cadence Olson led the charge as she claimed hold in the 50-metre and 100m backstroke, as well as a bronze in the 200m freestyle.

"The weekend overall has gone really well," said Olson. "In the 50 back, I just kept kicking and then my 100 back, I was tired, so I just kind of went with it and kept pushing."

10-year-old Makaya Arnott also had a strong meet with gold in the 50m freestyle, while she also picked up silver in the 100m and 400m free.

Arnott was one of four swimmers, joining Alex Kaulbach, Taylor Kaulbach and Max LeForte, that finished with 100-percent best times at the meet.

"I've been working on my stroke technique and I just kicked as hard as I could," said Arnott

The young swimmer added that she looks forward to the Summerfest meet every year, "To me this is my favourite meet," she said. "You get to spend time with your friends, it's outside and you get to cheer each other on."

10-year-old Mateah Purdy picked up a silver in the 100m breaststroke, while also claiming bronze in the 400m free.

She said she's coming away happy with how she was swimming over the course of the two days.

"I paced myself really well, I know I did my strokes well, so I just feel good overall about everything," she said.

"I didn't think I would do as good as I did in my 400-metre freestyle; In the fly I thought I'd do better and same with the breaststroke, I was really close to the person in first. I know what I need to work on though," added Purdy.
