The Moose Jaw High School Football League Tier I final won't involve any teams from Moose Jaw, as Central lost 10-2 to Swift Current Saturday at Gutheridge Field.

The Cyclones couldn't get their offence on track in the cold and windy conditions, but Cyclones head coach Colin Belsher said the weather wasn't the reason why his team lost.

“It’s just as cold for both teams, so that’s never an excuse for any side,” he said. “Swift Current just seemed like they wanted it a little bit more today and I know our kids were ready and they wanted it as well. Things didn’t just go for us today.”

Central got both of their points from a safety Swift Current conceded, although Central running back Ryan Vincent ended the game with an impressive 140-plus yards rushing.

“Swift Current, hats off to them,” he said. “They played an awesome game. They played a great defensive game against our offence. We just struggled holding onto the ball. We’d get the ball rolling, or they’d pop it out or we’d fumble it for whatever reason, and we struggled with that. And that’s pretty deflating to a team when you get things going and you’re not able to capitalize on that.”

Central quarterback Wil Ansell is in Grade 10, Belsher said.

Swift Current’s lone touchdown was scored on a 65-yard pass and catch to Rhett Vavra.

The Yorkton Raiders won 35-0 in their Tier I semifinal over Weyburn last week, setting up a Tier I final between Yorkton and Swift Current next Saturday.

In their Tier II division, Estevan won 32-19 over the Vanier Vikings in the semifinal, and the Elecs will play against the Peacock.
