PRINCE ALBERT -- A comeback for the ages was finished off in overtime by the Moose Jaw Warriors to take control of their first round series against the Prince Albert.

Brayden Burke scored just 19 seconds into the extra frame to lift the Warriors their second straight overtime win, beating the Prince Albert Raiders, 5-4, on Tuesday night at the Art Hauser Centre.

The Warriors scored twice in the final two minutes of regulation to send the game to overtime.

“It feels awesome,” said Burke after the win. “The guys in the room, we felt like we played a pretty good game for pretty much 60 minutes and felt hard done by to be down with a couple minutes left, but everyone on the bench just kept going and nobody gave up and that’s what you get when you stay together as a team."

Burke finished with two goals and three points to lead the way for the Warriors. Captain Brett Howden picked up the game-tying goal with 50 seconds left in regulation and had two points in the win.

The two teams meet again on Wednesday for game four.

Head Coach Tim Hunter said the team was determined to come away with the win, “You don’t see too many teams score two goals with a goalie pulled, so scoring with sixth guy on the ice twice is something that I haven’t seen in a while, but that’s the skill and try that we have right now and they were determined right from the puck drop to win in overtime,” he said.

From start-to-finish, it was the most complete game that the Warriors had played in the series as they peppered Raiders goalie Ian Scott from all angles with 45 shots.

Hunter said the Warriors fought through a lot to find success in the game.

“We still had to fight through a lot of interference, a lot of hooking and holding, it was hard sledding out there and our guys are trying to fight through it and get to the scoring areas and to generate 45 shots with all that going on is pretty good and our guys are starting to feel it,” he said.

Playing in front of their home fans for the first time in the playoffs, the Raiders came out fired up and scored the opening goal of the game just 59 seconds in when Curtis Miske fired the puck past goalie Brody Willms off a deflected puck.

Moose Jaw didn’t allow Prince Albert to have momentum for too long however as they tied the game on Ryan Peckford’s first of the playoffs at the 4:24 mark of the first.

The Warriors played a strong rest of the opening frame, which included killing off a four-minute high sticking penalty to Burke.

The second period started with the Warriors really pushing the pace and generating chances from their speed.

Their strong start to the period was rewarded when Burke scored his first of the playoffs, beating Scott with a shot off the rush just before the midway point of the second.

Moose Jaw continued to push the pace and generate chances, but it was the Raiders that got the rewards with Vojtech Budik scoring three minutes after Burke’s goal to tie the game.

Then with under three minutes to go in the second, Jordy Stallard beat a screened Willms to put Prince Albert up by one after two, despite the Warriors out-shooting the Raiders, 20-10, in the period.

With the lead heading into the third, the Raiders locked down defensively as they looked to hold off the charging Warriors.

After plenty of chances for the Warriors, it was Prince Albert to go the rewards when Justin Nachbaur finished off a pass from Regan Nagy for some breathing room with 2:40 to go in the game.

The Warriors didn’t go away and they were able to strike twice with their net empty. First, it was Josh Brook who did it himself with a great end-to-end rush that he finished with a shot between Scott’s legs and then just 47 seconds later, Brett Howden buried a rebound in front to tie the game with just 50 seconds to play.

Moose Jaw wasted no time in the extra frame as Tanner Jeannot set up Burke with a great cross-crease pass for the winner just 19 seconds into overtime.

“We were going all night, we had chances all night, we knew the goals were going to come and we’re lucky that they came at that time and it feels awesome,” said Brook. “We felt snake bitten all game and to score those goals at the end is huge.”

The Warriors and Raiders will meet again for game four coming up on Wednesday night at the Art Hauser Centre. The Pre-Game Show will hit the air at 6:40 p.m. on Country 100.
