After beating the top ranked Regina Pats last Friday, the Moose Jaw Warriors now find themselves as the team with the target on their back.

In this week’s CHL Top-Ten rankings, which were released on Wednesday, the Warriors have moved from an honourable mention last week all the way up to number three in the country.

That ties the highest ranking for the team in franchise history.

Moose Jaw is off to a 4-0-0-0 start to the season, but they’re not about to get caught up in the hype.

“Our ranking doesn’t really make a difference, those fluctuate throughout the year, so we’ll go into this weekend not really looking at it and just trying to win some more games,” said forward Brayden Burke after practice on Wednesday.

The Warriors swept their opening weekend home-and-home with the Prince Albert Raiders and then knocked off the Pats last Friday. They followed that up on Saturday by beating the Red Deer Rebels, who entered the game undefeated as well.

Burke said he’s excited about the team’s start, but it’s only that, a start.

“It’s early, we’re still trying to learn new systems and new linemates and what not, but to win four games in four different ways is good to see,” said Burke. “We know we can win by not just out scoring everyone, but by playing team defence and in other ways too.”

Burke has been leading the way offensively so far this season with four goals and seven points through four games. The line of Burke, Jayden Halbgewachs and Noah Gregor have combined for eight goals and 19 points.

“It’s been good so far, those are two great players, so it’s nice to be out there and try to help them make me better and do the same for them,” said Burke.

The Warriors have been getting contributions across the board to start the season with only five players failing to register a point in the first four games.

Second-year defenceman Jett Woo has found another gear at the offensive end with two goals and five points through four games.

He said the offence is coming out of opportunity more than anything.

“This year, I’m more comfortable, not only with my own game but our systems and what we’ve been learning off the ice, so as a team we’ve been playing pretty well and hopefully we can keep that going,” said Woo, who was listed as a ‘B’ prospect in NHL Central Scouting’s Preliminary Players to Watch List earlier this week.

The Warriors are dealing with some injuries to their back-end right now with Josh Brook out after having wrist surgery a few weeks ago and Colin Paradis suffering an injury last Friday.

Woo said he’s enjoying the extra ice time right now, but wants to see the team back up to full strength.

“It’s always good being able to help your team as much as possible, but we’ve got a great set of defencemen and if we put anyone in that situation, we’ll have a great outcome,” he said.

The Warriors have two more home games on tap this weekend as they get set to host the Kootenay Ice on Friday and then on Sunday, they welcome in the Swift Current Broncos, who earned an honourable mention in this week’s CHL Top-Ten after getting off to a 3-0-0-0 start.

Swift Current ended Moose Jaw’s season last year in a seven-game first round series.

Burke said they’ll be looking to avenge that loss on Sunday.

“They’ve started off pretty well here too, so that will be a nice clash right off the bat,” he said.

“We know that we’re going to have to beat those guys eventually if we want to get to where we’re going, so it will be nice to get them early, see how they’ve come along and how we match up.”
