As many people celebrate International Women's Day on Wednesday, the local YMCA Girls Mentorship Group will also be celebrating a successful program.

For the last few months six girls have been meeting with 3 facilitators to do crafts, learn about other women in the community and discuss

The girls were able to make bracelets that said "PRISM" on them to wear to the upcoming awards ceremony. topics of growth.

"Teaching girls valuable leadership skills, providing them with positive female role models in the community, introducing them to women in leadership or women in business. Women that they could aspire to be or that might motivate them down a certain path," explained Jenn Angus, the Manager of Educational and Community Initiatives at the YMCA and also 1 of the 3 facilitators of the Girls Mentorship Group.

Angela Sereda another facilitator and local Paramedic with the Moose Jaw and District EMS said the organizers volunteer their time, but it's worth it seeing what connections they're able to help these young women establish.

"The 3 of us come together every two weeks and get together with these girls for an hour and a half and provide an atmosphere where they can learn, grow (and) be with successful women."

The third facilitator is Jocelyn MacLeod, a consultant at the Ministry of Education.  She described how it all came to fruition.

"When the PRISM awards came around (3 years ago) it just kind of clicked that this is something that the 3 of us would be passionate about, engaged with and that we would be willing to volunteer our time towards. Once we knew we had different personalities, different skills and contributions to give to the young girls we knew we wanted to move forward."

They explained that the YMCA provide them with candidates for the program and it's for young girls in the community who show potential in leadership and would benefit being involved in the YMCA Girls Mentorship Program.

The final week for the program will be this weekend at the PRISM awards, as the six girls involved with be treated to an experience of being provided with a dress, their hair styled by a hairdresser and having their own table at the awards ceremony.

The second last meeting was held at the Grant Hall, where the girls were able to meet with two women in the community, enjoy dessert and do a craft in preparation to the PRISM awards.
