One bench on Main Street is getting some special treatment as Moose Jaw Pride took over the one in front of their new office at Rainbow Retro.

Pride Week begins next week (July 22nd to the 28th) and more pride symbols have started popping up around the Friendly City. MJ Pride made a more permanent one by painting the City bench in rainbow colours.

A random man walking up Main Street decided to stop to add a coat of paint.

Getting inspiration from other Pride organizations that painted rainbow crosswalks in their cities, MJ Pride wanted to do the same. But, since crosswalks like that are so easily vandalized by people "burning out" their vehicle's tires on the paint, they chose to do something that was just as vibrant and fun.

Walking past the same green bench every day, members of the pride group decided to paint the bench rainbow colours.

Taking it to the City of Moose Jaw, Council voted unanimously to allow the organization to paint and "adopt" the bench, hoping other organizations choose to do the same in the downtown core.

"I certainly hope it brings some visibility to diversity here in Moose Jaw, but I also think it's just something fun for Main Street," explained MJ Pride Executive Director Joe Wickenhauser. "Something to draw people's attention and just maybe give people a smile, something they can take a picture with and just something interesting on Main Street, something a little out of the ordinary. So yeah, we're really excited for that."

Wickenhauser, other members of MJ Pride, and even random passersby grabbed a paint roller and helped paint on the familiar pride rainbow that now has a permanent place downtown.

"There's also a hope that [the bench] will encourage people to talk about gender and sexual diversity and that people will have positive discussion around diversity in this community and we hope [the bench] accomplishes that."
