Rail safety is being highlighted after a report from the the Transportation Safety Board that says not enough is being done by railways to stop runaway cars.

The report cites the tragedy in Lac-Megantic that saw runaway cars explode, which killed 47 people, as an extreme example of what can happen. It also points to more common occurrences including in Saskatoon in 2016, when a freight car rolled through two public railway crossings before finally coming to rest without incident. The situation could have been much different had that car slammed into a vehicle or pedestrian.

The Board is calling for more safety measures, checks and devices that would prevent runaways.
