While last week's blizzard was dangerous, it was made even more dangerous when nearly the entire southern half of Saskatchewan lost power. Luckily though, the temperatures were not too low and many were able to keep warm with extra blankets or a hot shower.

But what happens if the power is knocked out for an extended period of time, and the temperature is much colder than it was last Wednesday night?

Deputy Fire Chief Mike Russell with the Moose Jaw Fire Department,

"This is the perfect time for us to come back and reiterate some of that stuff we talk about [in these emergency situations]; like having a battery-operated radio, having those flashlights, a first aid kit on hand, making sure you have water for 72 hours, making sure you have food that won't spoil, and that you're not bringing in any type of fuel-fired appliance or anything that is going to provide carbon monoxide and be dangerous in the house."

"Have a kit ready for 72 hours and plan for 72 hours. Part of our measures in place is providing reception centres, or warming centres if it's a prolonged event. We will advise people on where those centres are, how to get to them, and how to check-in."

If there was an extended power outage during dangerously cold weather, the City of Moose Jaw and Moose Jaw Fire Department will inform residents via social media and radio where 'reception' or 'warming centres' will be located.

"We utilize local radio like [Golden West Radio], which we're very fortunate to have, as well as social media like Twitter, Facebook, as well as SaskAlert would be putting stuff out. If people pay attention to social media, they'll be ahead of the game in knowing what to do and where to go."

"Once it gets beyond shelter, it's just a matter of paying attention to what's going on, listening to alerts, and following those alerts. Those will be very key to get people to where they need to go."

One other challenge that a power outage in extreme cold would bring says Deputy Fire Chief Russell, is fuel supplies for generators and emergency service vehicles.
