When Sarah Kristy was sworn into the Moose Jaw Police Service on July 16, 2021, she thought of the moment she would officially be on the force.

Kristy graduated from police college on December 10 and began working at the station on December 13. After a week of training, she was ready to patrol the streets with other senior officers helping to show her the ropes. She says her 20 weeks at police college prepared her for this moment more than she anticipated.

"I am shocked by how calm and prepared I feel in most situations, I still get heaps of help and support, and I am still observing my colleagues and learning because the real learning starts once you are on the street," Kristy says. Her college experience was tough on her in many aspects, but she was thankful to go through the intense training.

The constable is originally from Ontario and has moved several times as her husband is in the military. She says Moose Jaw is a perfect place to call home.

"I really love a smaller town, I love the fact that it has history and its own culture, it's a great place to raise the kids." She says the size is perfect for easily getting to know the city and the people.

Kristy says her main focus right now is being a patrol member, she says with the size of the agency, it is the best way to get experience in all departments.

"It's nice to be able to see a case through from beginning to end."

Starting a career in a male-dominated field as a woman would be intimidating for a lot of people, but Kristy says she doesn't feel like the odd one out.

"If you do your job and you try, and overall you are a respectable police officer, you are going to get respect across the board, regardless of your gender, sexual identity, the idea here is to be a good police officer." She says one day she would like to teach at the police college and show other women that they don't have to be a man to do the job.

With her husband stationed at 15 Wing Moose Jaw, Kristy says she feels very blessed to be able to call the city home.
