The heat wave may be gone by the time it's reopened, but summer fun will be able to continue next week at the Phyllis Dewar Outdoor Pool.

It was a tough pill to swallow when residents found out the pool was closed and even harder to find out it would be down for an extended time, and it all started with a power issue.

"We had a failed conductor coming from the SaskPower supply into the Natatorium building, at which point we decided to isolate the Natatorium from the YMCA so the Y would have power for the time being," explained Chris Heisler, the Facilities and Building Supervisor for the City.

Crews would have jumped on repairs immediately if they could have, but the parts needed for repairs had to be ordered from out of province. It wasn't until Friday that they were delivered to the Friendly City.

City workers and the electrical contractor will be working throughout the weekend to restore the power, once that happens, SaskPower will come on Monday for final checks and repairs.

When SaskPower does their part of the job, power will be shut off entirely, including the power going into the YMCA. A time hasn't been chosen for the repairs, but power will be shut off to the YMCA sometime Monday.

Once power is restored, the filtration system at the pool, the spray park, path lights, and fountain in the area will turn back on and, for the most part, got back to normal.

The spray park will be going back to normal, as crews were manually opening the water valve at the park so kids could still enjoy the water. The controller for the water will be restored once the power is returned, and City workers won't have to rotate through the area to turn off the water anymore.

Even with the power on, the pool will still be closed for a little longer.

"We expect that to be at the very least two days just because of the amount of time it's been down and the weather that we've had in that time period," Heisler explained. "So we are making strides to keep the chemistry up as we speak but without filtration, which is what the power supplies, we can only do so much at this point."

Parks and Rec department officials will take over after the power is back to get the water quality in good condition for swimmers.

The Phyllis Dewar Outdoor Pool is expected to be reopened this Thursday.
