Hoping to save the stress and money, the Town of Assiniboia has made some changes over the last couple of months to how their garbage collection is being handled.

It was a little over a month ago that the community of Assiniboia decided to make the change to out source their waste collection to Loraas Disposal.

Residents now see curbside collection of garbage every other week. On the off week, their recycling is also collected. Mayor Bob Himbeault is happy with the conversion.

"It's a curbside pickup with Loraas and I think everyone has gotten used to it, and I think everyone has gotten into the mode now."

Originally these changes were brought on because the town's garbage truck was in need of repairs and it was no longer worth putting the money towards fixing or replacing it.

Himbeault has seen the positives in sourcing Loraas for the collection versus their old equipment.

"Over the years our garbage truck has cost us a lot of money and lots was going to have to be spent further down the road, and this is the only way to go - it's the new modern way to go and way more efficient."

As of May 10th the community also reintroduced their composting program.

The community is not fully converted, however. Assiniboia is still collecting residential waste, which most likely will be changing shortly.

"On the commercial side we are still picking commercial bins up on our own sources but we are just in the process of looking at it with Loraas just to firm up the size of bins that businesses need and how many pickups they need," said Himbeault.
