Joining in the largest effort in the world of men working together to end violence against women, Mayor Fraser Tolmie and members of Moose Jaw's Partners Against Violence (PAV) Committee signed a proclamation for the White Ribbon Campaign.

Beginning November 25th, wearing a white ribbon a part of the campaign is a personal pledge to never commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against females.

Working on solving the root causes of violence and prevent violence, not only towards women, but against anyone regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation, the Partners Against Violence Group here in Moose Jaw is taking this opportunity to spread awareness of the campaign.

"It's very important that the City is showing this leadership in this work to try and end violence," explained Lori Lancaster, a member of PAV and the Executive Director of the Moose Jaw Transition House. "Saskatchewan still, unfortunately, does have the highest provincial rate of police-reported domestic violence in Canada. It's an unfortunate statistic that we're all working very hard to address."

This campaign will also be about the different ways we can stop the end of violence against women. Such as promoting gender equality, challenging sexism, homophobia, and degrading language, and teach boys the language of equality to name a few.

Members of PAV were at the Moose Jaw Warriors home game handing out white ribbons and spreading the word about the campaign.

"[This is] such an important movement which really sort of tries to define where men should be in this day and age in terms of their responsibility to being aware and trying to take an active approach to end violence against women," Sgt. Kevin Pilsworth with the MJPS said.

The White Ribbon Campaign begins on the 25th and runs until the December 6th, on National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women and the anniversary of the École Polytechnique massacre where women were targeted and killed at a Montreal Campus.

You'll be able to find ribbons at City Hall, the Moose Jaw Public Library, the police station and the Chamber of Commerce when the campaign begins.
