Moose Jaw has a housing situation.  Even if you can afford the increasing cost of rent, it's still hard to find a decent apartment.  But if a proposal received by Moose Jaw City Hall Wednesday is approved, there could be a some relief on the horizon.

City Hall has been trying to find a use for the old Civic Centre since the announcement of the multiplex going downtown. There have been a few ideas kicked around since then but nothing legitimate until Wednesday.  The city had issued a Request for Proposals and despite sending out seven packages to interested parties, just one proposal was received by the deadline.

The company that filed their proposal with the city would like to demolish the old rink and build two, high rise style apartments with over 200 units combined. One building would be regular style apartments with 1-3 bedrooms each.  The other is designed with 65 units, designed to be 5 bedroom suites that might appeal to SIAST students or others on a budget.

City Manager Garry McKay says they must now do their research into the proposal, checking financial sources, timelines and comparing the outline to the guidelines set out in the RFP.  "We will take the next couple of weeks to review it against the established criteria." said McKay. "But it's also about the proponent, in terms of experience, financial ability and those types of things."

When issuing the Request for Proposals the city set out a number of criteria that a project had to meet in order to be considered. One of the criteria was that the developer offer to pay a minimum of $400,000 for the Civic Centre site and that the project be worth no less than $3 million.

McKay believes City Council will review the proposal in December but wasn't sure when a decision could be expected.
