Conexus Credit Union announced Friday that Moose Jaw's South Hill branch will close October 31, 2017, with all customer business being merged with their High Street West location downtown.

The main reason? The declining number of in-person transactions.

"It's not unique to Conexus that branch transactions are declining as people use less cash and cheques," said Jacque DeCorby, Senior Vice-President of Retail Banking for Conexus

"We probably average around seven or eight per cent (of all transactions) across all of our branches," he continued. "We see more use of point of sale, online and mobile transactions."

"(South Hill) would be one branch where the decline has been significant enough in volume that we don't feel we're doing our members a service in how we're using their money to serve them."

The Conexus south hill branch has also gained infamy since 2015 due to a spate or robberies and attempted robberies.

DeCorby said those incidents, while concerning, did not play a role in the decision to merge the two branches.

"We are always concerned about the safety and security of our employees and members," he said, adding "we have 41 locations and annually we look at how the trending of services are going."

DeCorby says no jobs will be lost in the merger, and that as of November 1, 2017, the Conexus branch on High Street will be open Mondays through Saturdays each week.
