As the school year finishes up Saskatchewan Physicians are calling on schools across our province to enhance fitness and nutrition.

The Saskatchewan Medical Association wants more physical education classes and they want school boards to develop strategies to use active transportation to and from school along with better food in our schools.

Director of Education for the Holy Trinity School Division is Delmer Wagner. He says elementary school children in his division get at about 150 minutes in phys-ed every week. "We are close and you always have to divide the pie by the number of ciricular opportunities that are being provided by the school so if its not 150 its close and instances where it falls short its got to do with the general programming because you're having to provide for everything in the school. The thing that I would like to emphasize with this report is that school is but one opportunity for children to engage in physical activity."
