Moose Jaw Wakamow MLA Greg Lawrence was not personally present at his first court appearance at Moose Jaw Provincial Court on Monday to speak to assault charges.

Instead, Lawrence was represented by lawyer Estes Fonkalsrud. Judge Brian Hendrickson granted him an adjournment until April 15. He said he is still awaiting video disclosure from the Crown prosecutor.

Crown prosecutor Rob Parker elected to proceed summarily on the charges.

According to a press release from the Moose Jaw Police Service in January, police began investigating on June 27, 2023, an assault during an interaction between two people. However, Parker said in court that the offences date back to 2019.

Lawrence announced on Jan. 30 that he was resigning from the Saskatchewan Party Caucus because an "active police investigation is occurring into historical complaints unrelated to his duties as an MLA.” A day later the Moose Jaw Police Service sent out a press release saying that Lawrence had been charged with assault and assault by choking.
