The 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs opened up on Wednesday night with five games hitting the ice.

Moose Jaw Warriors alum Joel Edmundson scored one of the biggest goals of his young NHL career when he potted the overtime winner for the St. Louis Blues in their 2-1 win over the Minnesota Wild in Game 1.

Edmundson buried a shot as he snuck down from the point and won the game for St. Louis with just over two minutes to go in the first overtime period.

The Blues have a 1-0 series lead on the Wild. They meet for Game 2 on Friday in Minnesota.

It wasn’t a good start for Canadian teams in the playoffs as Montreal, Ottawa and Edmonton all lost on home ice.

The Canadiens were shutout 2-0 by the New York Rangers at the Bell Centre. Hendrik Lundqvist made 31 saves to blank Montreal. They play Game 2 on Friday.

The Senators gave up two third period goals and lost 2-1 to the Boston Bruins on Wednesday in Game 1. Bobby Ryan scored for the Senators, but Frank Vatrano and Brad Marchand gave the Bruins the win in the final frame. They don’t play Game 2 until Saturday afternoon.

The Oilers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on the San Jose Sharks, but the Sharks scored once in the second, once in the third and then Melker Karlsson won it 3:22 into the extra frame.

Oscar Klefbom and Milan Lucic opened the scoring with goals in the first period for Edmonton.

They’ll meet for Game 2 on Friday night.

Toronto and Calgary will try to have a better start to the playoffs on Thursday night. The Maple Leafs are in Washington to face the top ranked Capitals at 5 p.m. and the Flames head into Anaheim at 8:30 p.m.
