The extraction of palm oil is extremely destructive and is the largest culprit in Indonesian deforestation.

13-year-old Girl Guide Ophelia Bourdage is taking a stand by creating a petition to swap palm oil out of girl guide cookies for a more sustainable oil.

She said she was surprised how many people were unaware of this major problem.

"It's in almost everything and nobody knows about the destruction its causing," says Bourdage

Bourdage says she's always been an environmental activist, but being a Girl Guide this issue is close to her heart.

"It's not a big company like Nestle, this is something I found a bit more reasonable to change," says Bourdage.

Not only does the extraction of palm oil create mass amounts of CO2, but it also alters the soil, so the forest will never be the same.

"By 2022 98 per cent of Indonesia's forest is going to be gone."

She sent Girl Guides an email about a year ago and didn't receive a response but with over 15,000 signatures, she is hoping to receive feedback.
