The Leadership 20 class at Central Collegiate has taken it upon themselves and organized a teddy bear drive as part of their school project.

“We thought for our project that we wanted to collect some teddy bears to create some smiles on people’s faces that were kind of missing that sense of joy and comfort in their life, we thought teddy bears would be a good way,” says Leadership 20 student, Chloe Johns.

The class also raised some funds to put towards creating self-care packages for women at the Moose Jaw Women’s Transition House.

Leadership 20 student, Georgia Greenough broke down how many teddy bears were raised, along with self-care packages.

“We estimated 165 teddy bears and we did 30 care bags, plus little extras here and there,” explains Greenough.

The teddy bears will be donated to the Moose Jaw Humane Society, the Moose Jaw Police Service, and the Moose Jaw Transition House.

The fundraiser started out with teddy bears, but it turned into so much more, as the class also received a number of bike donations to help Moose Jaw newcomers with transportation.

“We have a teacher named Mr.Omar who is a Swiss worker and is in contact with the Newcomer Centre. It’s good for people from these countries that don’t have much, and they’re coming here and they don’t have a way to get around,” adds Leadership 20 student, Griffin Andrews.

Andrews estimates about 40 bikes were donated by members of the community, and have gone to 28 families.

To entice students to donate at Central, the group put on a pizza lunch, as well as an event to get the chance to pie a teacher in the face with a monetary donation.

Leadership 20, Mrs. Rowe says the class is the coolest class she has gotten to teach.

“I do nothing and they do everything, which is what it should be. You give them the vehicle and they learn to drive it.”

Leadership 20 is a course that is offered at Central and student Meerika Hutchinson learned a lot about herself through this course.

“I doubt myself a lot and seeing the successes of this group, and everything I was able to accomplish throughout this whole course, it just proved to me that I’m capable on my own, and capable of doing amazing things,” says Hutchinson.
