A man accused of a random stabbing attack with a syringe in downtown Moose Jaw last October has been found fit to stand trial.

In Moose Jaw Provincial Court on Wednesday, legal aid lawyer Deanna Harris said the psychiatric report had been received, but it did not consider whether Brandon Bluecloud could be found not criminally responsible. Bluecloud appeared in court via video from remand.

Provincial Crown Prosecutor Rob Parker said an initial assessment was that the Crown was not willing to consent to a not criminally responsible trial and that fitness to stand trial was more appropriate. Now that the report has been recieved, Parker asked for additional time to consult his head office to revisit the possibility of a not criminally responsible trial.

If Parker gets the greenlight from his head office, it would mean there could be a contested “trial” to see if Bluecloud is found not criminally responsible for the offences. Bluecloud is expected back in Moose Jaw Provincial Court on June 24.

Bluecloud is facing charges including mischief, possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes and aggravated assault.
