It's the only steam-powered locomotive in the province, and it's in Moose Jaw.

The Short Line 101 steam-powered locomotive officially returned over the weekend with many visitors coming to ride the train.

Karla Rasmussen is the Education and Public Programs Coordinator for the Western Development Museum and she described why this locomotive experience is important to the city of Moose Jaw.

"There are other vintage locomotives operating in the province however they are diesel and we have the only steam one. To be able to take this artifact out and to be able to hear it and to smell the coal and to feel what it's like to go on this train ride, it's just incredible and there's nothing like it."

The train made it's comeback last year after a two-year absence because of track maintenance, and is maintained year-round by volunteers.

Rasmussen also explained who is behind running the locomotive.

"We have volunteers from all different backgrounds at the museum here, and our core group of steam volunteers some of them have come from CPR they've had experience working with trains, but some of them have started from the ground up having little or no experience."

Rasmussen noted that the WDM will be running the train for as many weekends as they can.
