While Moose Jaw has not had too many scorching days yet this year, with the official start of summer on Thursday, warmer temperatures could become more common.

Constable Jayme Hoffman with the Community and Strategic Services Unit of the Moose Jaw Police Service, wants to remind residents that vehicles can heat up quickly as temperatures rise.

“If you’re making stops in your day-to-day travels, this is a friendly reminder to take your children indoors with you, and if you have pets, it is best to leave them at home,” said Hoffman. “Leaving the windows cracked or parking in the shade is inadequate.”

She added that it’s unsafe to leave children unattended in the car even when there’s air conditioning. “There’s a risk of your vehicle being stolen, and the doors could be unlocked. Children can accidentally operate power windows, which could cause potential issues as well.”

Bystanders should call 911 if they see a child or pet in a vehicle who looks distressed. The number to call if they don’t appear to be in distress, but you have concerns, is the non-emergency line at 306-694-7600.  “Police will respond to the call for service and proceed appropriately depending on circumstances,” explained Hoffman.

“In some cases, individuals may receive education on the matter, and in other cases, Social Services may be contacted, or charges may be laid.”

Hoffman said that while police do receive occasional calls for pets or children in cars, they expect calls will likely increase as temperatures rise.
