Walter Albert Cook

Walter Cook passed away peacefully and suddenly on Tuesday, October 2nd , 2018 at the Craik Health Centre, Craik, SK. Walter, at the age of 85, predeceased by his beloved wife Violet (1998). Loving father of Bill Cook, Tracey Cook and Tammy Topp. Cherished grandfather of Paul Topp (Tori Sander) and Ashley Topp (Mark Hansen). He will be lovingly remembered by his sister Dorothy Hocaluk, and by his in-laws Vicky Barnson and Donna and Art Barnson, and all of his nieces and nephews. Walter was born to Paul and Violet Koch in Vantage, SK, on June 15, 1933. As a boy, Walt attended school in Hazenmore, Saskatchewan, but after he finished grade 12, the family moved to Moose Jaw where he attended Peacock Technical School.  After finishing his formal education, Walter did a number of unique jobs while working at Temple Gardens. He was a Magician's Helper (never revealing a secret), and helped out as a roadie at many concerts for performers such as Burton Cummings. Walter worked in construction for BAO Oil Refinery in the early 50's. In 1952 he followed in the career path of his father and went to work for the C.P.R. as a Carman Train Inspector, Crane Operator, and Relief Foreman. He met Violet Barnson in Selkirk, MB, while he was working as a Carman on the trains out of Winnipeg. They were married in Selkirk Lutheran Church on April 23, 1960, and began raising their family on First Ave. E, before finally settling on Athabasca St. West in Moose Jaw in 1966. Over the years, the family enjoyed many camping and fishing trips, and visiting with family throughout Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia. He spent many years playing and coaching hockey and football, and enjoyed golfing. As a Free Mason and later a Shriner, he and Violet were privileged to visit many Lodge functions all over North America. Various children's charities and hospitals became very near and dear to his heart. Walter will be missed for his wonderful, unique sense of humour. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at 1:00 pm at Parkview Funeral Chapel, 474 Hochelaga St. West, Moose Jaw. Reverend Bob Langdon will officiate. All are welcome.
