There's no place like home and the Moose Jaw Canucks are hoping that's the case this weekend.

The Canucks are getting set to welcome in eight teams for the 2015 Baseball Saskatchewan Midget AA Provincial Championship, running Friday-Sunday at Ross Wells Park and Blackwell Diamond.

Moose Jaw will be looking to use their home field advantage as they go for the provincial title.

“It's going to be nice to be in our hometown, hopefully we can bring it home,” said pitcher/first baseman Riley Morhart.

This is Morhart's final season with the Canucks and he can think of no better way to go out than by capturing a provincial title at Ross Wells.

“Just the feeling of playing at Ross Wells,” he said. “It's nice to be at home and playing in front of the home crowd.”

Jordan Logan, who's also playing in his final season with the Canucks, said there's no way to avoid thinking about winning a provincial title at home and they just have to use that as motivation.

“It would be awesome,” he said. “The stands might be packed a little bit more, you can invite your friends out, so you want to play good for them and see what you can do.”

The Canucks are coming off a semifinal loss to the Weyburn Beavers at the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League playoffs in Humboldt. They won't have to wait long to get another shot at the Beavers as they're their first opponent up in the round robin.

“It's going to be nice to see those guys again,” said Morhart. “Obviously they're going to bring a little bit of attitude, a little bit of cockiness to the game, so we're hoping to shut them down as soon as we can.”

Offence hasn't been a problem for the Canucks very often this season, but their bats went quiet last weekend in Humboldt, which played into their early exit.

They took some live batting practice on Wednesday at Ross Wells with Moose Jaw Miller Express head coach Michael Hunt helping out. They're hoping that will get them ready to go against the best that the province has to offer.

“Our biggest thing is our approach at the plate. This last weekend we were taking more than we were going after, so it was nice to be here and get the batting practice today at home,” said Morhart. “(Hunt) isn't here to throw just for fun, so our approach at the plate will definitely be better come the weekend.”

The Canucks posted a 19-3 record during the regular season and have found success against every team that they're facing at provincials, so they know that if they play their game, they'll have a good chance at walking away with a title.

“We know what we're up against, so we know what we have to expect coming into the games this weekend, we just have to come prepared ready to play ball,” said Logan.

The Canucks and Beavers hit the field on Friday afternoon at 3:30pm. They will play the Regina White Sox on Saturday morning at 11:30am at Ross Wells and then finish the round robin against the Humboldt Dodgers at 4:30pm at Blackwell Diamond.

The opening games are at 1:00pm Friday afternoon with the North Battleford Beavers taking on the North East Red Sox at Ross Wells and the North West Pirates squaring off with the Regina Pacers at Blackwell.

The playoffs go on Sunday. If a tiebreaker is required, the semifinals will go at 12:00pm and the final is set for 3:00pm. If there's no tiebreaker game, the semifinals will be moved up to 10:00am and the final will go at 1:00pm.
